PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHINGBRIEF BIODATA


Dr. Marlen Elliot Harrison is currently teaching “MA Thesis/Capstone in English” and coaching other instructors in his role as Team Lead for the online M.A. programs in English and Writing at Southern New Hampshire University COCE. He previously taught SNHU’s “Pedagogy and Theory of Writing” and regularly pursues academic research in applied writing and cultural studies. As a writer and journalist, Marlen is an Executive Editor of the Fragrantica.com family of websites, a magazine and database dedicated to fragrance and olfaction currently read by over 6 million viewers a month and published in 13 different languages.

Dr. Harrison has been teaching composition & communication; language (TESOL) & literature; gender & sexuality; and social science research writing/methods at international universities in Asia, Europe and North America since 1997. As such he is a transdisciplinarian who is as much at home in the worlds of composition pedagogy and language teaching as in social linguistic and qualitative research methods. Having taught students in over 50 different academic programs at no less than 10 different universities across 5 countries and three continents, and with 70+ international academic presentations – including TESOL, EuroCALL, JALT, AAAL, ASA, AAA and CCCC – and 30+ international academic publications – including manuscripts in the following peer-reviewed journals: Qualitative Research in Psychology (USA), Language Learning in Higher Education (UK), Writing on the Edge (USA), Reflections on English Language Teaching (Singapore), CALL-EJ (Australia), and The Language Teacher (Japan) – he is passionate about researching the crossroads of technology, language, learning and identity. Dr. Harrison is the recipient of numerous research and educational grants/fellowships; a Best of JALT (Japan, 2006) award; and international grants/honoraria from universities in Canada, Japan, Finland, Denmark and Belgium (Erasmus).

As a journalist, Dr. Harrison’s contributions have been included in The Washington Blade, MensJournal.com, MensFitness.com, Playboy.com, Forbes.com, NYTimes.com and international publications such as Finland’s Anna magazine and Canada’s Glow magazine. His self-created, online magazine, PerfumeCritic.com (2006-2010)/ThePerfumeCritic.com (2011-present) and work in the beauty industry have earned him international recognition and invitations to speak at events such as the 2008 Symposium of the American Society of Perfumers. 

Having earned a PhD in writing and language teaching from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Harrison also earned a Masters degree in education and human development (counseling) from The George Washington University and worked in public and mental health at institutions such as the Psychiatric Institute of Washington (DC), Johns Hopkins Hospital, and the North Baltimore Center.

PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHING

“To love what you do and feel that it matters, what could be more fun?”

In the classroom, I employ a humanizing, student-centered pedagogy where all learners’ voices are valid, and where practice, exploration and reflection are more important than perfection. I combine my years of experience as an artist, mental health practitioner, writer and as international traveler to create a critical learning environment that honors the diversity of learner abilities and identities.

I believe in absolute transparency of my classroom and achieve this by maintaining an open-door policy for colleagues and a centralized website for syllabi. The classroom is transformed into both an authentic and online learning/discourse community through utilization of digital learning platforms where students regularly interact, know each other’s names, and all student work may be viewed and commented on by other members of that community. Such participation lays the groundwork for digital literacy and application of these skills later in their careers.

By taking a problem-based, social-constructivist approach to learning and content-integrated approach to teaching I encourage students to work on projects that are meaningful to them; I believe they engage more deeply when learning is connected to their various identities and as such might be considered a critical expressivist. I see it as my responsibility to help learners build bridges between their self-described passions and talents and their chosen disciplines and intended professions.

One of the current buzzwords in pedagogy is undoubtedly scaffolding, the support provided that helps the learner accomplish his or her goals. By breaking down the components of learning into smaller steps and focusing on collaborative discussion and peer feedback, I feel that students can be provided with effective scaffolding. All work is recycled and revisited as students start small and then expand having already laid some of the groundwork through regular activities. Instructor conferences, small group collaboration, peer mentor consultations, revision exercises, and peer discussion, for example, all allow additional support to the evolving learner.

My overall goal as a teacher is for students to complete their courses with a feeling of success and a positive, open-minded, curious attitude towards further study. If I can effectively remove some of the performance anxiety and instill a sense of pleasure in the processes of learning, then I will feel that I have been successful. Because students need opportunities for self-development, I also offer course assistantships where students who have successfully completed my courses are invited to mentor future students. I also encourage the further development of academic communication skills via supporting publication and presentation of student work.

Brief Biodata

Dr. Marlen Elliot Harrison has been teaching language, communication, composition, literature and social science research writing/methods at universities in Asia, Europe and North America since 1997. Having published numerous articles and chapters on topics ranging from second language teaching to writing classroom pedagogies, he specializes in writing across the curriculum, learner development, and applied writing methods for qualitative research (autoethnography). Having taught at University of Tampa, Florida; University of Jyväskylä, Finland; Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), Pennsylvania (where he also completed his PhD in Composition and TESOL); and at Doshisha and St Andrews Universities in Japan, Dr. Harrison currently works in the online MA English program for Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) COCE as adjunct graduate faculty and  a Team Lead. Additional experience includes serving as a writing project coordinator and contributor for The Smithosnian’s National Museum of the American Indian, and as an Executive Editor and columnist for Fragrantica.com. With a background in mental health counseling and an MA in Education and Human Development/Counseling from The George Washington University, he is an inter-disciplinary instructor-researcher who works at the crossroads of humanities and social sciences to explore how both spoken and written language are shaped by, and help shape, cultures and identities.

  1. Hi Marlen! I thought about it before but never really got to ask you, what did you think of Aarhus and Denmark? And what did you think of the Danish language? That is if you had the time to get familiar with it of course🙂
    Also a quick question for my own topic: do you think it would be easier for Americans to adapt to the Danish culture or the other way around? Personally I find it easy to adapt to the American culture, was curious about your thoughts.

  2. Hi Peter. As I had already learned when visiting Sweden and living in Finland, Nordic folks are usually fluent in English and highly familiar with American pop culture. I really liked Copenhagen’s beauty and history but found Aarhus to pale in comparison. I’m curious about the similarities and differences among Swedish, Danish and Norwegian…

    I think that many Americans of European and African ancestry, with their general lack of international travel experiences and monolingualism, would find Danish culture, or any “other” culture to be “new and interesting”. But then there are the Americans who are multilingual and multicultural, a growing number of Americans in fact, who would likely approach Danish culture with less novelty.

Dr. Marlen Elliot Harrison is currently teaching “MA Thesis/Capstone in English” and coaching other instructors in his role as Team Lead for the online M.A. programs in English and Writing at Southern New Hampshire University COCE. He previously taught SNHU’s “Pedagogy and Theory of Writing” and regularly pursues academic research in applied writing and cultural studies. As a writer and journalist, Marlen is an Executive Editor of the Fragrantica.com family of websites, a magazine and database dedicated to fragrance and olfaction currently read by over 6 million viewers a month and published in 13 different languages.

Dr. Harrison has been teaching composition & communication; language (TESOL) & literature; gender & sexuality; and social science research writing/methods at international universities in Asia, Europe and North America since 1997. As such he is a transdisciplinarian who is as much at home in the worlds of composition pedagogy and language teaching as in social linguistic and qualitative research methods. Having taught students in over 50 different academic programs at no less than 10 different universities across 5 countries and three continents, and with 70+ international academic presentations – including TESOL, EuroCALL, JALT, AAAL, ASA, AAA and CCCC – and 30+ international academic publications – including manuscripts in the following peer-reviewed journals: Qualitative Research in Psychology (USA), Language Learning in Higher Education (UK), Writing on the Edge (USA), Reflections on English Language Teaching (Singapore), CALL-EJ (Australia), and The Language Teacher (Japan) – he is passionate about researching the crossroads of technology, language, learning and identity. Dr. Harrison is the recipient of numerous research and educational grants/fellowships; a Best of JALT (Japan, 2006) award; and international grants/honoraria from universities in Canada, Japan, Finland, Denmark and Belgium (Erasmus).

As a journalist, Dr. Harrison’s contributions have been included in The Washington Blade, MensJournal.com, MensFitness.com, Playboy.com, Forbes.com, NYTimes.com and international publications such as Finland’s Anna magazine and Canada’s Glow magazine. His self-created, online magazine, PerfumeCritic.com (2006-2010)/ThePerfumeCritic.com (2011-present) and work in the beauty industry have earned him international recognition and invitations to speak at events such as the 2008 Symposium of the American Society of Perfumers. 

Having earned a PhD in writing and language teaching from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Harrison also earned a Masters degree in education and human development (counseling) from The George Washington University and worked in public and mental health at institutions such as the Psychiatric Institute of Washington (DC), Johns Hopkins Hospital, and the North Baltimore Center.

PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHING

“To love what you do and feel that it matters, what could be more fun?”

In the classroom, I employ a humanizing, student-centered pedagogy where all learners’ voices are valid, and where practice, exploration and reflection are more important than perfection. I combine my years of experience as an artist, mental health practitioner, writer and as international traveler to create a critical learning environment that honors the diversity of learner abilities and identities.

I believe in absolute transparency of my classroom and achieve this by maintaining an open-door policy for colleagues and a centralized website for syllabi. The classroom is transformed into both an authentic and online learning/discourse community through utilization of digital learning platforms where students regularly interact, know each other’s names, and all student work may be viewed and commented on by other members of that community. Such participation lays the groundwork for digital literacy and application of these skills later in their careers.

By taking a problem-based, social-constructivist approach to learning and content-integrated approach to teaching I encourage students to work on projects that are meaningful to them; I believe they engage more deeply when learning is connected to their various identities and as such might be considered a critical expressivist. I see it as my responsibility to help learners build bridges between their self-described passions and talents and their chosen disciplines and intended professions.

One of the current buzzwords in pedagogy is undoubtedly scaffolding, the support provided that helps the learner accomplish his or her goals. By breaking down the components of learning into smaller steps and focusing on collaborative discussion and peer feedback, I feel that students can be provided with effective scaffolding. All work is recycled and revisited as students start small and then expand having already laid some of the groundwork through regular activities. Instructor conferences, small group collaboration, peer mentor consultations, revision exercises, and peer discussion, for example, all allow additional support to the evolving learner.

My overall goal as a teacher is for students to complete their courses with a feeling of success and a positive, open-minded, curious attitude towards further study. If I can effectively remove some of the performance anxiety and instill a sense of pleasure in the processes of learning, then I will feel that I have been successful. Because students need opportunities for self-development, I also offer course assistantships where students who have successfully completed my courses are invited to mentor future students. I also encourage the further development of academic communication skills via supporting publication and presentation of student work.

Brief Biodata

Dr. Marlen Elliot Harrison has been teaching language, communication, composition, literature and social science research writing/methods at universities in Asia, Europe and North America since 1997. Having published numerous articles and chapters on topics ranging from second language teaching to writing classroom pedagogies, he specializes in writing across the curriculum, learner development, and applied writing methods for qualitative research (autoethnography). Having taught at University of Tampa, Florida; University of Jyväskylä, Finland; Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), Pennsylvania (where he also completed his PhD in Composition and TESOL); and at Doshisha and St Andrews Universities in Japan, Dr. Harrison currently works in the online MA English program for Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) COCE as adjunct graduate faculty and  a Team Lead. Additional experience includes serving as a writing project coordinator and contributor for The Smithosnian’s National Museum of the American Indian, and as an Executive Editor and columnist for Fragrantica.com. With a background in mental health counseling and an MA in Education and Human Development/Counseling from The George Washington University, he is an inter-disciplinary instructor-researcher who works at the crossroads of humanities and social sciences to explore how both spoken and written language are shaped by, and help shape, cultures and identities.

  1. Hi Marlen! I thought about it before but never really got to ask you, what did you think of Aarhus and Denmark? And what did you think of the Danish language? That is if you had the time to get familiar with it of course🙂
    Also a quick question for my own topic: do you think it would be easier for Americans to adapt to the Danish culture or the other way around? Personally I find it easy to adapt to the American culture, was curious about your thoughts.

  2. Hi Peter. As I had already learned when visiting Sweden and living in Finland, Nordic folks are usually fluent in English and highly familiar with American pop culture. I really liked Copenhagen’s beauty and history but found Aarhus to pale in comparison. I’m curious about the similarities and differences among Swedish, Danish and Norwegian…

    I think that many Americans of European and African ancestry, with their general lack of international travel experiences and monolingualism, would find Danish culture, or any “other” culture to be “new and interesting”. But then there are the Americans who are multilingual and multicultural, a growing number of Americans in fact, who would likely approach Danish culture with less novelty.
